Open a till with a starting float and close it against a counted drawer. Staff count blind, so the expected figure only appears after they commit their count. Every hour of takings has an owner.

Opening float

Every shift starts with a counted drawer.

The first time a cashier opens the till, it asks for the opening float: the cash already in the drawer. The till will not take a sale until that is done.

Once you confirm, EVRST shows how it reached the figure your count is measured against: the opening float, cash sales, refunds, voucher cash, float added, and every drop to the safe on its own line with its time and reason.

Corrections

A closed shift is never rewritten.

If last night’s missing amount turns up in the morning, a manager posts an adjustment against the shift. The report then reads short by the amount, adjusted by the amount, approved by whoever authorised it. Both halves stay visible, which is what makes the correction defensible later.

Per channel

One channel over and another short is not zero.

A shift’s channel figure is a total across every card and transfer channel, so one channel over and another short by the same amount nets to zero. Click the figure to unfold each channel with its own difference.

What is a blind count?

The expected cash figure stays hidden until the cashier has committed their count. Only then does EVRST show what it expected and how it reached that figure, so counting never turns into typing.

Can a closed shift be corrected?

A closed shift is never edited. A manager posts an adjustment against it, so the report shows the original shortfall, the adjustment, and who approved it. Both halves stay visible.

Do card differences count against the cashier?

No. Channel differences are never part of the cash difference. A card total that does not match is almost always the bank rather than the till, so only the cash difference is one a cashier answers for.
